No late night postal retail hours for tax returns

(Austin/KJCE) Mailing your tax return in? Don't count on the Post Office being open late to help Tuesday night.

The U.S. Postal Service says it will have no special postal operations for Tax Day in its Rio Grande District, which includes the Austin and San Antonio areas.

"With more people filing income tax returns electronically, the Post Office has seen a significant decline in mail volume from last minute tax filers,” said District Manager Brenda Baugh. "With the increasing decline in customer demand, with the exception of a few late night mail collection locations at our regional mail processing plants, we will not be extending hours for April 18 Tax Day operations."

While retail hours at most area post offices close at 5:30 p.m., any mail deposited before midnight in the collection boxes at Austin's General Mail Facility - located at 8225 Cross Park Drive in Northeast Austin - will receive the April 18 postmark according to postal officials. For any other locations, the drop box should indicate the last collection time for that particular location.
