Lawmakers start filing bills for special session

June 19, 2017 - 8:00 am

AUSTIN (KJCE) - With 30 days to go until the beginning of a special session, lawmakers are getting back to work at the Capitol.

Today is the first day lawmakers can file bills for the upcoming session that begins July 18. Gov. Greg Abbott laid out an ambitious 19-item agenda for the session earlier this month, but lawmakers can only move on to those items after they take care of must-pass sunset legislation that keeps a number of state agencies alive.

With the special session only lasting 30 days, it remains to be seen how much progress they will make.

Lawmakers can file any bills they want, but unless the governor specifically adds a topic to the call for the special session, they won't be considered.
