AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Gas prices continued their downward trend in the past week, according to the latest data from AAA Texas.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Austin is $2.22, down one cent from last week. The statewide average sits at $2.24, down three cents from last week; year-to-year, Texas drivers are paying 25 cents more per gallon this year than they did this time in 2016.

Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in Midland are paying the most on average at $2.52, while drivers in San Antonio are paying the least at $2.13 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.48, which is one cent less than this day last week and 28 cents more than the price per gallon at this same time last year.

Cheaper winter gas prices are in markets across the bulk of the country as gasoline demand hits the lowest mark since February. On the week, 90 percent of states saw their gas price average drop – some even by double digits. All major metropolitan areas across Texas saw average gas price averages decrease over the last week with the exception of Galveston-Texas City, Longview, Midland and Odessa where the gas prices averages remained steady.
