(Austin/KJCE) A credit card skimming device was found at a North Austin gas station Thursday afternoon, officials say.

Austin Police located the device at a gas station pump in the 12000 block of North MoPac Expressway. The device was removed and all of the station's pumps were inspected for other devices. Officials say the station operator was unaware of the device's presence and is not implicated in any illegal activity connected to the device.

Officials with the Texas Department of Agriculture say they look for illegal credit card skimmers as part of routine inspections of over 400,000 fuel pumps statewide. If a skimmer device is suspected or found, TDA will contact local authorities for removal of the device and subsequent criminal investigation.

Consumers are encouraged to be aware at the fuel pump. If the credit card scanner looks like it has been tampered with, move to another pump or pay inside. If you notice fraudulent charges on your account, contact your financial institution immediately.

Officials say you can file a complaint about a fuel pump by calling the Department of Agriculture at (800) TELL-TDA.
